AxonVR builds haptic technology that enables realistic feeling in virtual reality for the first time. HaptX™ Skin is a haptic textile that simulates lifelike touch, allowing you to feel the texture, shape, motion, vibration, and temperature of virtual objects. HaptX Skeleton is a lightweight exoskeleton that extends the realism by applying physical forces to your body. Together, these advanced haptic technologies bring virtual experiences to life with unprecedented levels of realism.
AxonVR's HaptX technology delivers the most realistic touch sensations in the world. When combined with virtual reality, it makes for a magical experience. Watch this video to see the reactions HaptX inspires. It's the next best thing to experiencing it for yourself.
HAPTX: Haptics Evolved
Lifelike touch. Anywhere you want it.

Lifelike touch. Anywhere you want it.
HaptX™ Skin is a thin, flexible haptic textile made up of an array of microfluidic actuators. By varying pressure and temperature at each actuator, HaptX creates sensations ranging from the brush of a butterfly's wings to the impact of a punch. From the warmth of a cup of coffee to the chill of a snowball. HaptX can bring the sense of touch to any surface. We can apply it to a wide range of products across a variety of form factors.
HaptX Skeleton extends HaptX's immersive capabilities by delivering force feedback. HaptX Skeleton moves with you through your full range of motion. It senses body position and applies forces to represent the shape or weight of virtual objects. HaptX Skeleton can be programmed to assist or resist motion. Master the perfect golf swing as your body is guided through every detail of the swing in real time. You move the exoskeleton, and the exoskeleton can move you.
HaptX SDK is a software toolkit that empowers developers to create touch-enabled experiences. At the heart of HaptX SDK is a framework for physical simulation of haptic interactions. HaptX SDK works seamlessly with leading game engines, making it easy for developers to create VR experiences that leverage advanced haptic capabilities.
By bringing these technologies together, AxonVR will realize its founding vision: a world in which virtual experiences are indistinguishable from real life.

"AxonVR is showing off a haptic system that’s frankly pretty awesome... The result, when paired with visual suggestions from a headset, is a highly precise imitation of a real object.
For an apple, you’ll get a round, even pressure. The corner of a small block will poke at a specific point. When the deer lands on your palm, you can feel each of its tiny hooves."
“AxonVR reminded me that technology can be absolutely magical. Saying that AxonVR has come up with a convincing simulation would be underselling what the HaptX experience is like.”
"The most impressive part of the demo was when I got to place a virtual deer on my hand. I could feel the individual points of contact as the deer moved its legs around my hand... The experience raised the bar for what is capable with haptic feedback."
"The holodeck may be science fiction, but thanks to AxonVR’s HaptX technology and NVIDIA’s innovation, we’re getting closer to making it a reality."
“This felt like a revolutionary device. It felt like I was walking into another world and trying something out from the future.”
"The most groundbreaking immersive VR development of 2016, and the one we are most likely to remember in the years ahead."
At AxonVR, we’re working on haptics, an industry that almost every analyst has projected to have a double digital CAGR for the next five years. For that reason, we recently sought out James Hayward, an analyst with IDTechEx who focuses on wearables, sensors, and haptics to get his take on the broader industry trends and learn a little more about his approach to researching companies and new technologies.
When Jake Rubin came to me with the idea of building a full-body human machine interface, one thing was quickly clear: We were going to need a multidisciplinary team of engineers to have a chance at succeeding in his vision. Choosing the right people for a team is hard enough, and it’s more of a challenge when you’re trying to find engineers with the experience, breadth of expertise, and ambition to tackle a problem as big and revolutionary as what we aimed to do.
The realization of technology capable of delivering realistic and complex haptic feedback is like going from having a Kodak camera to having a digital camera with photoshop. We’ve unlocked a palette of tools, filters, and colors, all of which are unfettered from reality. In VR, we can edit not only the reality you can see, but also the reality you can feel.

Jake has spent the past decade envisioning the full-body human-computer interface system that would become AxonVR. Four years ago, he brought this vision to Dr. Bob Crockett, and together they developed the AxonVR platform. Jake is an innovative software and system architect and a lifelong gamer with a deep passion for virtual reality. Prior to AxonVR, Jake attended Washington University in St. Louis on an entrepreneurial scholarship. Ironically, he left after one semester to build his first entrepreneurial venture.
Dr. Bob co-founded AxonVR with Jake Rubin, and guides hardware development. He is Professor and Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Cal Poly, and the founder of Proof of Concept, an engineering firm that provides R&D and prototyping services to early-stage tech companies. Bob specializes in advanced materials and manufacturing, and has over 20 years of systems engineering and technology development experience. Bob earned an undergraduate mechanical engineering degree from UC Berkeley, an MBA from Pepperdine, and a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Arizona.
Joe leads business development and sales for AxonVR. He has over 15 years of experience building global strategic partnerships with major media and technology companies. Prior to AxonVR, he led business development at Microsoft’s MSN division, where he negotiated and managed deals with the sports, media, and entertainment industries. Before Microsoft, Joe co-founded Nexchange Corporation, an e-commerce startup that raised over $16 million in funding and received five U.S. patents. Joe earned an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and an MBA from The Wharton School.
